Miguel Garcia returns with a new episode and welcomes Bobby Wagner of the Tipping Pitches podcast to discuss the Los Angeles Dodgers’ owner Mark Walter being under the microscope of the Justice Department. In this episode Bobby explains how Walter, long seen as a Guggenheim Partner’s main finance figure, appears to be investing personally in sports teams through irregular trades using life insurance-related funds, raising questions about where sports ownership money comes from and how sports leagues benefit from inflated franchise valuations. Bobby argues that private equity is a parasitic model that degrades fan experience and community ties while extracting profit, and Miguel and Bobby criticize the rapid spread of gambling and prediction markets in sports.
Miguel also asked Bobby to explain “Dodgers Derangement Syndrome,” and they both give their thoughts on the looming MLB labor fight over a proposed salary cap and likely lockout. The episode closes with October baseball predictions (Spoiler alert: Miguel was very wrong and Bobby was very right).
